Dan Warren takes A's & Hayley Davis snatches B's

Hayley Davis deep in concentration on her way to winning the B race series.

After some last minute pre weekend race prep the day was magic 20 degrees plus and the biggest turn out for this season. 2012 is looking promising already and we'll be announcing dates for a couple of summer events along with our 2012 winter series very soon. We are currently working with sponsors to promote next seasons events which will include an NZ series 4-5 races from Auckland to Queenstown. Potentially with riders from Australia to add a international flavour to the winter months.
Dan Warren our New Zealand CX Champ took out today A race in style powering away in the last laps from Gary Hall and Josh Page, Ben Ross took the overall prize for 1st junior from the 4 race series. The B event had a re shuffle from our last race podium with Marko Zatezalo topping the leader board after coming 3rd in the last event, Hayley Davis and Laura Harris completed the podium with Hayley Davis taking out the B race series overall.
Our future champions event kids under 12, saw Mitchell Heney clear away from 2nd place Jacob Cooper with 3rd place & first girl going to Casey Stent.
See cxhb.blogspot.com for full results posted in the next few days.

A great location at Pakowhai Country Park Hastings saw fast dry conditions, a couple of muddy holes and a steep flood bank run. Riders started today's event by running 50m with their bikes to the first single track where they were allowed to mount their machines. This set for a rampant start and really mixed things creating a lot of chaos. Due to some dry weather condition in this week the gravel sections and off road tracks were hard and fast calling for a high skill level with a lot of loose unstable shingle.
Finally the afternoon was finished off with most peoples first spring BBQ courtesy of Will & Andy's Gourmet Sausages that went down a fine treat while everyone toasted Springs first day of sun tanning!

Now that cyclocross is finished in the Bay for 2011 a team of CXHB riders are planning to make a trip down to Wellington in September for the North Island CX champs held by The Bike Hutt in Upper Hutt. If anyone is keen please contact us and we'll reserve a spot for you.

A big thanks goes to all the volunteers and organising committee for set up and clearing of the course without the strong support from Hawkes Bays local cycling community we could not have made this years series the success it was.
A big thanks also goes out to Ramblers Cycling Club and the Hawkes Bay Mountain Bike club (Pan Pac), Hawkes Bay Regional Council and Hastings District Council who have supported the events and we hopefully continue to work together in 2012's bib to host the NZ Cyclocross Champs in the Bay.
Lastly a big thanks for the following sponsors who provided prizes:
The Old Church Restaurant,
The Hub Cycle Centre
Avantiplus Hastings
Raiseys Sports Nutrition
Worralls Ltd Auckland.
The Shot Coffee.
Hoops BBQ hire
Wil & Andy's Gourmet Sausages.

Looking forwards to the summer ahead and recommend all keen crossers to visit there local bike shops and order a cyclocross bike early for next years events. Join a few Mountain Bike events throughout summer and ride your cross bike to get familiar with the position and you'll be half way to having the most fun with a bike on the planet.

See ya next year.

Cross fever~!!

CX fever is building in Hastings riders have been out in force today checking out the course and testing tyres, a little damp under the tyres in places and a few pockets of mud here and there two testing hills and some fast gravel.
We are excited and hoping for some precipitation tonight to dampen things off.
If you are a good photographer and are keen to take some sharp pics for us please come and let us know out CXHB photo girl Gaby is going to be away for the next two events and we want to make sure we capture riders in compromising positions!
Come have a chat to us before hand if your keen.
So weather has been fine today, a little fog and Sunday morning is forecast to remain fine with weather not planned to change until later in the day.

So wash the mud of your mud beast, oil the chain and we'll see you there.

Results: Series Race 2

CXHB hosted its second race of the winter cyclocross series today Sunday at Pan Pac’s Eskdale MTB park and it proved to be the perfect course for all involved. No rain or wind perfect cool conditions and due to bucket loads of rain during the week we have heaps of mud!!

The course used was modified due to flood water on many of the tracks, so one of the testing climbs was eliminated due to safety, however the revised route without much in the way of hills proved to be just as testing. Several jumps were added to make things more challenging but all in all it was pretty much as hard as it gets.

Recently crowned NZ Champ Dan Warren took out the A Race is style clearing out from his rivals, Josh Page coming in second and Gary Hall after loosing a lot of ground from braking his chain and riding a borrowed bike rode extremely well to get up for 3rd place over taking Blair Heney (4th) in the final lap. The first lady home in the A race was Hayley Davis and the first junior was Ben Ross.

The B race was dominated by Richard Mills who cleared out early and was never pulled back in taking first place followed by a close match with Laura Harris and Ashleigh Neave ..neck and neck until the fianl lap. Ashleigh lost valuable time in the mud along with fatigue setting in allowing Laura to take second place ahead of a fast finishing Gareth Howard.

The kids race was a shorter course but had its fair share of mud and water to deal with. Mitchell Heney came out on top with Jacob Cooper second and a close sprint to the line for 3rd and 4th between Ben and Kiri Gouldsbrough, Ben coming in a few bike lengths ahead of Kiri.

Our next events:

Race 3: 14th August Roys Hill- Highway 50 Hastings

Race 4: 28th Chesterhope Park/ Pakowhai Hastings

Full results will be posted Monday night.

Mountain & Singlespeed Bikes Welcome!

We just want to confirm that mountain bikes are very welcome at our cyclocross races. Single speed riders are also welcome as Some courses depending on the weather can actually give single speed riders a clear advantage. In fact your welcome to bring along any bike you choose providing it doesn't have a motor! This applies to all races run A, B and kids race.
We are promoting this new sport to the Hawkes Bay Region and want to give everyone the opportunity to have a crack and participate.

We are well aware that there are only a few cyclocross bikes in the region so as the sport grows we want to encourage as many participants as we can.

We and most of the public are well aware that you can source a cyclocross bike from your local bike shop usually by special order or can modify an existing touring type bike.
Trademe is an option or alternatively we encourage those who have cyclocross items they wish to sell to bring them along. There will be a lot of people around on Sunday who can offer advice and thanks to local radio stations and the Hawkes Bay Today we should have it well publicised.

Anyone who still requires further information can email us at blackpeloton@gmail.com, send us a message on facebook to CXHB or just call into your local bike shop and they should be able to help out.

Finally just a message of advice these sort of events: Historically cyclocross events are held in very muddy conditions, therefore you will most likely get very dirty! Its a chance to wallow in the mud with a lot of other people on bikes, there will be all sorts of obstacles such as logs or barriers to jump, stairs to climb & grassy paddocks to ride through.

Make sure you bring a change of clothes, towel and a plastic bag to put all your dirty clothes into, often things like a scrub brush or a bucket can be helpful when washing down.
Water and hoses will be provided close to finish line as will be changing facilities and toilets.

So good luck and we hope to see you at EIT this coming Sunday 10am for some good old fashioned fun.

Course Map EIT 26th June 1st CXHB Race

GPS map of proposed EIT CX course for the 26th June..In its current form it measures 1.6km.We reckon it will be around 5-6 mins for the fast guys as it is, once we add a few barriers etc . There's plenty of toilets just 50 mtrs from the start, and we have an electric jet washer that we will have available for washing down bikes.

There will be a kids race run in between the two events so if have little ones and they want to have a go bring them along.

Training Thursday night Pettigrew Arena.

CX training this week Thursday 16th June, we will meet in the car park behind Pettigrew Arena at 6pm dont forget your lights.
Also this Sunday 19th June 10am at the same venue as above,
We will cover several parks, beaches, and river bank areas practising technique and remount/dismounts.
All welcome would be nice to have a few more starters so anyone who is keen to race should come to training. The tips you can learn in one session can make a world of difference.

Take advantage of riding along side a former Great Britain cyclocross coach and sports physiologist Carl Paton, in form Dan Warren and the rest of the CXHB fraternity...

See you there.

Dan Warren 2nd at Trentham CX Race.

Dan Warren managed a great second place in the first race of the Bike Hutt Cyclocross series at Trentham, Wellington. Carl Paton also scored a great finish a little further back in 7th place. Having to deal with very wet mud riders were probably carrying an extra 2 or 3kg of mud during the race as a result of wet pre race conditions in the days leading up to the event.
The leaders managed 8 laps of the course which included field riding, stairs, a technical bush section and several jumps. A great result leading up to CXHB's first race on the 26th June at EIT.
Warren led on the first lap but was passed by strong contender Alex Revell who went on to win, with Warren about 40 seconds back.

Team McKenzie's prototype CX machine!

So your think, I don't have a CX bike, what can i ride with out getting my fancy shinny road bike dirty? Well here's the answer... Drag out your old MTB you used to ride to school or work etc, find some old bits and pieces in your shed, put your road wheels on, and VOILA! You can have your very own "pimped out custom" CX bike! Feel free to ask questions on how to do conversions.
